STORY PLAN

story imgOur Story Plan is based on seven pillars of humanities, seen in Dr. Angelou’s life and work:

SEVEN PILLARS OF HUMANITY

  • Family
  • Perseverance
  • Identity
  • Journey
  • Race
  • Faith
  • Courage

This Story Plan remains content-focused and does not yet consider exhibit structures, graphic treatments, images, media elements, etc. Each element profoundly affected Dr. Angelou's definition of "Joy." Her experience will inspire the audience to find moments of joy in their own lives, despite what may be challenging circumstances.

CURRICULUM OUTLINE

"When you learn, teach."
Maya Angelou.

Just as education was central to Maya Angelou's life and work, education is instrumental to the success of the traveling museum. The Tour of Joy curriculum will coordinate with schools, churches, and communities to maximize access and pedagogical opportunity for visiting this one-of-a-kind museum. In order to reach students of all ages, we will design age appropriate curricula for elementary, middle, high school, and university students, as well as lifelong learners. While the purpose of the museum itself is to high- light and celebrate Dr. Angelou's work as a writer, activist, and visionary, the purpose of the curriculum modules is to draw from the six pillars of the humanities established in the Story Plan and to put her work in conversation with other writers, activists, and visionaries. These lessons are meant to deepen students' understanding of Dr. Angelou's work while honing critical thinking skills and inspiring them to tell their own stories. Beyond preparatory educational support and materials, all visitors will be challenged to take courage and share their stories through the Mosaic project and other interactive components that extend outside of the museum experience. Therefore, our hope is that the "Tour of Joy" will provide a space for everyone—regardless of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability—to observe and experience the life and work of Dr. Maya Angelou and then tell their stories and listen to others' different from their own. When we share stories, as Dr. Angelou calls us to do, we understand, as she once explained, “there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
